Therapeutic Listening

What is Therapeutic Listening®?

Therapeutic Listening® (TL) is a structured sound-based intervention designed to support a child’s sensory processing, emotional regulation, attention, and participation in daily routines. Children listen to specifically engineered music through high-quality headphones as part of a personalised programme overseen by a trained Occupational Therapist. TL is not simply “listening to music”. Each album has been developed using modulated sound frequencies that influence the nervous system and support more organised responses to sensory input.
Each TL programme runs for 8 weeks, with a personalised sequence of music albums selected specifically for your child’s sensory profile, goals and responses. Families are supported closely throughout with structured check-ins and OT sessions.

Therapeutic Listening

It is used widely alongside Occupational Therapy to support:

• Emotional regulation and calming
• Improved attention and focus
• Greater engagement in learning tasks
• Enhanced body awareness and motor planning
• Reduced anxiety and “fight/flight” responses
• Improved daily routines (morning transitions, bedtime, mealtimes, self-care)

What Families Typically Notice:

Every child is different, but families often report improvements such as:

• Becoming calmer and more settled
• Less “on edge”, overwhelmed or reactive
• Better sleep and morning routines
• More organised movement and body awareness
• Improved attention for learning
• Greater ability to cope with busy or noisy environments
• Better transitions between activities
• More engagement in play, social time or self-care

Early changes are often subtle, but build steadily over the 8 weeks.

What Parents Need to Do

To get the most out of the programme, families are asked to:

• Ensure consistent daily listening (typically two sessions per day)
• Complete fortnightly feedback forms
• Communicate any difficulties promptly
• Avoid changing headphones, devices or volume without guidance
• Build listening into predictable daily routines

Your therapist will guide you through every step.

Is Therapeutic Listening® Right for My Child?

TL may be suitable if your child:

• Struggles with emotional regulation
• Finds it difficult to concentrate
• Becomes easily overwhelmed or distressed
• Has challenges with sensory processing
• Experiences difficulties with transitions

Your OT will make sure the programme is appropriate before any recommendation is made.
